What? Where the heck is she going?

As you may or may not know, (depending on what your child told you.)  I have been offered a position as a Gifted and Talented Helping Teacher for the district.  There are only two of us for the district and we work with the Horizons coordinator and Horizons teachers throughout the district.    I will be offering in-services, sample demonstration lessons, even creating project rubrics to help teachers in their instruction of Horizons students.  I had heard the position was coming open and it was suggested I apply (and we all know that means we should.)  I was hoping they would wait until May for the hiring but they will / did not, and the move had to be done in January.  This is actually very difficult for me, because I do not like leaving things half finished, and I feel like leaving the classroom in January is doing that.  It is also difficult leaving students I have worked with for half a year when they are almost ready for high school (and so well trained! errr!).  As it was explained to me though, right now, I affect 150 students, in this new position, I will be affecting thousands by working with teachers who work with K and H students.

Who will my child's new teacher be?

Effective January 5, 2004, Mr. Joe Swenceski has taken over all my classes.  (I kind of had a say in this.)  Mr. Swenceski has been teaching one class of IPC from the beginning of the school year.  He has been in my classroom almost every 4th period since the first day of school observing routines and processes so he would be sure his one class of students were getting the same information my 4 classes were.  He has a great sense of humour, and loves to do labs, so I know the students will be fine with him (Oh, and he likes to do things my way, so he can't be all bad! :)

How will expectations and classroom structure change?

When we talked about the move, the decision was made that we would try to keep the physical environment for the students pretty much the same.  When they come into their room on Tuesday, everything will still look exactly the same, except of course for the teacher.  The grading structure will remain the same.  Mr. Swenceski will be doing the same projects the next 3 six weeks (in fact he will be using my rubrics as well.)  The chalkboard will still carry the two weeks schedule and this website will continue to exist and be updated every week as normal. (Mr. Swenceski and I will be in close contact since he really wants to continue what I started.)  Everything will continue to be the same even though I will not be there. (although I reserve the right to return and visit and guest teach from time to time... since that is my new job!)

Will we still be going to Astroworld in April?

Of course!  Not only that, but I get to go too!  The paperwork for us to go was turned in - in October and we are definitely going.  All the letters, permission slips, etc. are all ready copied and ready to hand out to the students in February.  I know they look forward to it all year (I do do too!)  You will be hearing more about the trip in February.  We have to collect the money early so that Astroworld can get it 4 weeks early and the district can make our check on time.  So parents, get ready to have some fun in April!
